Reading Middlemarch with Mark Scarbrough – Zoom

September 28, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am EDT
|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Tuesday, repeating until November 16, 2021

MIDDLEMARCH: It’s one of the finest novels ever written. So let’s take a long, luxurious stroll through George Eliot’s masterpiece to discover its successes and (yes) its failures. It’s big enough to encompass some massive fault lines. And it’s ambitious enough to hold them together. (Almost.) How does an atheist write about a Christian heroine? How does one of the leading intellectuals of her day write the story of rural people? How does Mary Ann Evans become George Eliot? In this eight-week slow-walk, we’ll answer these and many more questions. Read slow. Stick with us so that we’re reading together. Let’s make this a group project to explore this fine piece of art.

Eight Tuesday mornings, 10:00 to 11:30am

9/28 Prelude and Book I “Miss Brooke” (chapters 1 – 12)

10/5 Book II “Old And Young” (chapters 13 – 22)
