SUMMARY:Digital Safety for Youth: What Parents Should Be Talking About - Library
DESCRIPTION:Workshop presented by Project Sage. Registration is requested at conwalllibrary.org. \nStranger danger is nothing new – but online gaming and social media have brought strangers into the home in the guise of peers and friends. With platforms changing constantly and new apps appearing every day\, how can adults keep their kids safe from online exploitation? This interactive\, 90-minute workshop designed for parents and caregivers of teens and tweens provides a foundation for talking with youth about online safety\, including online stranger danger\, cyberbullying\, artificial intelligence\, and more. This will be a safe space for adult participants to practice having the often uncomfortable conversations that can make all the difference in the life of a child who has been targeted for exploitation.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt - Library
DESCRIPTION:“The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt argues that the rise of smartphones and social media since the early 2010s has caused a dramatic decline in youth mental health\, creating an “epidemic of mental illness”. The book links this to a “great rewiring of childhood\,” where a shift from a play-based to a phone-based childhood has led to increased anxiety\, depression\, and loneliness\, while reducing real-world social skills\, independence\, and resilience. Haidt proposes solutions for parents\, schools\, and tech companies\, including delaying smartphone access and increasing unstructured play. Eiseley Kotchoubey and Margaret Haske will run the discussion. Registration is requested at cornwalllibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Art Opening: Peter Gerakaris\, "Oculus Serenade" - Library
DESCRIPTION:In his latest exhibition entitled Oculus Serenade\, Peter D. Gerakaris’s selection of vibrant tondo paintings literally and figuratively focus the gaze on our wondrous natural world\, merging microcosmic and macrocosmic apertures. As luminous portals\, the works present motifs such as endangered botanicals\, exotic avian species\, topographical forms\, and aquatic life — which the artist has experienced firsthand whether trekking in semi-tropical jungles\, scuba diving amongst fragile coral reefs\, or hiking along the Housatonic in Cornwall. These oculi reverberate like stereographic\, kaleidoscopic lenses that meld nature and culture. \nHaving favored the tondo format for over two decades\, Gerakaris’s exhibit orbits around a hand-painted\, original 4ft diameter “Orchid Oculus Tondo.” This painting evokes a dreamlike cosmos where viewers encounter endangered Amazona Versicolor Parrots (from St. Lucia) and larger-than-life tropical orchids flowing amongst rhythmic foliage. With a harmonious compositional layout\, the meticulously-layered elements are hand-painted with a call-and-response process over an initial background where the artist allows chance spills\, drips\, and dyes to remain exposed — an approach likened to “visual jazz” by curator Simon Watson. \nMeanwhile\, a set of four smaller “satellite” works on paper float in a constellation around the larger tondo. These “Oculus Reprise” works are each uniquely hand-embellished print versions based on larger parent paintings. Using a matrix of cutting-edge digital scanning and photographic technology to capture the original paintings — an aperture-based process befitting of these aperture-esque artworks — Gerakaris then transforms the imagery into smaller archival pigment prints on fine art paper\, over which he painstakingly hand-applies new details with gouache\, acrylic\, and iridescent paints\, sometimes collaging and cutting out shallow relief\, or hand-gilding with precious metallic leaf over the surface. \nAmerican interdisciplinary artist Peter D. Gerakaris creates vibrant paintings\, public installations\, origami sculptures\, & mosaics that engage nature-culture themes through a global lens. Currently based in Cornwall CT\, he was raised a free-range child in New Hampshire and later maintained a NYC studio for nearly two decades. Gerakaris earned a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA from Hunter College where he received the Tony Smith Prize. \nThe work will be on display until February 28th.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Wendell Minor\, American Stories - Library
DESCRIPTION:Art show and Opening: Wendell Minor\, American Stories. Curated by Stephanie Plunkett. November 22\, 2025 through January 11\, 2026. Exhibition Opening Event: Saturday\, November 22 from 5pm to 7pm. \nAward-winning illustrator Wendell Minor drew his way through childhood in Aurora\, Illinois\, inspired by America’s heartland and the richly illustrated magazines that were so much a part of life at the time—from nature-themed favorites like Outdoor Life and Field & Stream to the vastly popular Saturday Evening Post\, which showcased the work of Norman Rockwell and many others. Determined to forge a career as an artist\, he sold his beloved 1955 Chevy to pursue his studies at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Florida and moved to New York in 1968 with little more than his portfolio in hand. Since then\, his striking visual narratives and elegant designs have appeared on nearly two thousand book covers and scores of children’s books inspired by his love of art\, history\, science\, and the natural world. \nA long-time resident of Washington\, Connecticut\, Wendell has created almost every jacket for books by Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, David McCullough\, and works by Jean Craighead George\, Robert Burleigh\, Pat Conroy\, Larry McMurtry\, and many others. The exhibition will feature a selection of the artist’s striking book jacket art\, as well as original watercolor paintings for his many children’s books\, which include Pumpkin Heads\, Smitten with Kittens\, Tiny Bird\, Wild Orca\, and Night Train\, Night Train\, among others. Registration is requested for the opening reception at cornwalllibrary.org
