DESCRIPTION:Tuesday mornings\, September 29\, 2026\, through November 17\, 2026\, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. \nIn the 1940s\, Harvard scholar F. O. Matthiessen reinvented U. S. literary history by resurrecting the almost forgotten writers from the years before the Civil War: Hawthorne\, Thoreau\, Melville\, and Whitman (along with the still-recognized Emerson). Since then\, Matthiessen’s roll call of the greats has dominated much of what we see as the move from the early Republic to the Civil War crack-up in 1861. However\, Matthiessen’s scholarship omitted vast swaths of writers who didn’t fit his notion of the Transcendentalist mindset. In this literary seminar\, we’ll take our initial cue from Matthiessen but work to expand his cast of authors by including other voices\, thereby broadening the scope of what it meant to be a U.S. citizen in the fateful years before the chaos. \nLive only. Landscape photographs. \nLazlo Gyorsok\, a passionate photographer with over five decades of experience capturing the essence of diverse subjects\, hails from Hungary. He received his first camera at the age of ten\, igniting a lifelong love affair with photography. After traveling through parts of Europe\, his first experience with America was New York City where he lived for five years and after that moved to Cornwall. The beauty of Cornwall has afforded Lazlo an endless supply of photographic opportunities. \nJack Kearney was born and raised on Long Island\, New York\, where an early love of the arts first took shape through music. After earning a degree in Music Technology\, Composition\, and Performance from New York University and spending 15 years leading technical teams at Apple\, he turned his creative focus toward photography. In 2024\, he relocated to West Cornwall\, Connecticut\, dedicating himself fully to capturing the quiet character of the Northeast landscape. Kearney’s work explores subtle light\, atmosphere\, and the understated beauty of the natural world.

DESCRIPTION:After-school Art Program: Tuesdays after school 3:30 – 5pm. Starting September 8. \nOutdoor play\, arts and crafts\, snack. Free. \nDue to the overwhelmingly positive response to our after-school art program\, we are asking for weekly registration for our young art participants. We will open registration every Sunday at noon for Tuesday’s program that runs from 3:30-5:00pm (and 12:40pm-2:00pm on Region 1 Early Dismissal days). We cap registration at 15 participants and will have a waitlist for cancellations. Those who are registered are welcome to utilize bus drop-off from CCS. (Contact provezzi@cornwallschool.org to request). We will allow walk-ins only if the max of 15 participants has not yet been met. \nPlease note that The Cornwall Library is open to all\, and library policy is that outside of planned supervised programming\, children under 9 years of age must have an adult or responsible party with them while at the Library.

DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed\, award-winning author of Reading Like a Writer and Lovers at the Chameleon Club\, Paris\, 1932 comes an utterly original novel inspired by the strange friendship between Charles Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen and set during the summer when Dickens’s family life exploded. \nIn the summer of 1857\, when British newspapers warned of an approaching comet about to destroy the earth\, an unusual-looking stranger arrived at Charles Dickens’s home\, Gad’s Hill\, in the countryside outside London. Dickens had met Hans Christian Andersen at a dinner party\, a decade before\, and\, in a moment of desperation\, had invited him to visit. \nThe visit did not go well. The eccentric Danish author of classic fairy tales\, who barely spoke English\, outstayed his welcome and alienated the Dickens household\, which included nine children. Even the oblivious\, obsessively self-conscious Andersen sensed the increasing tension between Dickens and his unhappy wife\, Catherine\, but was slow to understand—or to believe—that Dickens had fallen in love with a young actress appearing in his new play. For Andersen\, those five weeks were a series of social mistakes and embarrassments but ultimately a lesson in how life’s most humbling experiences can be transformed into art. \nFive Weeks in the Country\, a work of imaginative fiction inspired by actual events\, is Francine Prose at her dazzling best. \nRoxana Robinson will serve as interlocutor. She is the author of eleven books—seven novels\, three collections of short stories\, and the biography of Georgia O’Keeffe. Four of these were chosen as New York Times Notable Books\, three as New York Times Editors’ Choices. Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, Harper’s\, Best American Short Stories\, The Southampton Review\, Epiphany and elsewhere. The Cornwall Library is pleased to announce an upcoming book talk by artist\, author\, and Yale professor Adam Van Doren who will be discussing his book In the Founders’ Footsteps: Landmarks of the American Revolution (Godine)\, which incorporates his essays and paintings of 32 historic sites of the War of Independence. Historian Nathaniel Philbrick has written the preface.\nThe book has been awarded the 2022 Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Colonial Wars\, and has been praised by The New Criterion in its recent issue: “Van Doren’s watercolors give the book visual appeal\, and the window it opens on the lives of these places\, past and present\, makes it worth keeping around.” \nAfter the talk\, which begins at 4 pm\, Van Doren will have books available and will happily sign them to anyone who purchases a copy.
