Voting tabulators will be used. Absentee ballots will be counted at the polls.  \nAbsentee ballots will be available on October 6 from the Town Clerk. Office hours: Monday to Thursday from 9 A.M. to noon and 1 to 4 P.M. Completed applications can be placed in the designated secure drop box outside the town clerk’s office or can be mailed. Completed ballots can also be placed in the drop box or mailed. Do not take your ballot to the polling place on Election Day. It must be processed by the town clerk and she will submit it to the polling place to be counted. Ballots must be returned to the town clerk by 8 P.M. on Election Day.

DESCRIPTION:Art Show and Sale:  Seeing Words\, Asemic Art by Sally Van Doren.  Artist’s Reception November 11\, 5pm to 7 pm\, including poetry reading and artist’s talk at 6 pm.  In Seeing Words\, her upcoming show at The Cornwall Library\, artist Sally Van Doren presents a selection of works on paper that explore the conceptual terrain created when words become image. An acclaimed poet\, her drawings\, paintings\, prints and poems arise from the same source\, thousands of pages of illegible handwriting\, also known as asemic drawing. Seeing Words offers new drawings from her Anagram Series as well as asemic works. Van Doren works with materials including stencils\, graphite\, colored pencil\, ink\, marker\, oil pastel and spray paint. She says “I find that between writing legible poetry and making illegible visual art\, I vacillate constantly between being in a state of losing language and a state of finding it.” \nThe show runs through December 30.  Registration is requested for the opening at cornwalllibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Poetry and Art: A Creative Writing Workshop with Sally Van Doren - Library
DESCRIPTION:As poet Mark Van Doren once said: “The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.” This immersive workshop is designed to generate new writing through discovering and nurturing our poetic voices. Using in-class prompts\, we will explore how voice emerges and creates the distinctive character that makes our writing unique. Whatever form this new work takes\, whether it’s a poem\, a prose poem\, a short essay or other form of creative non-fiction\, these exercises will stimulate the writer’s imagination and inspire further exploration. A particular focus for this session will be ekphrastic writing\, which is writing that describes vividly and is in response to a work of art. Participants will be asked to bring in either a photograph or an image of an artwork that has sparked their interest. This session should be fruitful for those new to writing creatively as well as seasoned writers. We’ll draw upon the wonderful resource of a constructive small group to learn how others hear us and how we can best hear ourselves. \nSeating is limited and registration is required at cornwalllibrary.org.

DESCRIPTION:The Souterrain Gallery invites you on Saturday\, November 25. 3-5 pm to the Opening Reception of works by Elizabeth Kasevich. \nLife as Art \nOnce when someone asked what art meant to me\, I immediately replied “Life.” Ever since I can remember\, I have used the visual arts not only as a way to communicate with others\, but as a way to process the images located in my unconscious. According to the poet John Keats this endeavor is known as “soul making.” With degrees in English Literature and Archetypal Psychology\, I view art as a spiritual journey and my paintings\, collages and constructions always have a spiritual meaning and ultimately express my soul’s connection to the divine. \nI generally begin a work of art by placing random colors or shapes on the chosen ground and then dialogue with these elements. A conversation ensues as I develop the work: layering transparent papers or paint in response to the images formed by the revealed shapes\, colors or spaces. I work in this manner until I feel that the conversation is over. I agree with the artist Hans Hofmann\, who says in his book\, “Search for the Real”\, that “Art is Magic” the whole process is mystical\, totally encompassing and exciting; the results unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:Susanna Moore and Robert Becker in conversation about the historic town of Lahaina on Maui that was destroyed by wildfires in August\, at the Cornwall Library on December 2nd at 4 pm.  The Hawaii raised novelist\, memoirist and historian Susanna Moore will join Robert Becker\, author\, historian of Hawaii and descendant of Hawaii missionaries to discuss the complex layers of culture and history that Lahaina represented and embodied prior to being leveled by the fires.  Through selected readings and a discussion\, followed by Q & A\, Moore and Becker will also talk about the efforts to recover and rebuild Lahaina.  Any donations made as a result of this conversation should go directly to the Maui Strong fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.  \n \nMoore is the author of the novels My Old Sweetheart\, The Whiteness of Bones\, In the Cut and most recently The Lost Wife\, as well as I Myself Have Seen it: The Myth of Hawaii and Paradise of the Pacific: Approaching Hawaii. Becker was the arts editor of Andy Warhol’s Interview\,  is the author of Nancy Lancaster; Her Life\, Her World\, Her Art\, and is currently at work on a history of American colonialism in Hawaii. He has contributed to articles about Hawaii to Granta and Hyperallergic and is president of the board of directors of the Merwin Conservancy on Maui.\nRegistration is requested at cornwalllibrary.org.
