SUMMARY:Eva Chen Reading of "I Am Golden" - Library
DESCRIPTION:Live at The Cornwall Library  \nEva Chen is a first-generation Chinese-American who grew up in New York City\, and since 2020\, the New York Times best-selling author and her family have been settled in Litchfield County. Eva released her 8th children’s book\, I Am Golden\, earlier this year. In collaboration with the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon\, we are delighted to announce that on Saturday\, May 7th at 10:30am\, Eva will be sitting down with a group of our young patrons and their caregivers at The Cornwall Library to read her latest work. Please register as attendance is limited.  \nIllustrated by Sophie Diao\, I Am Golden is a joyful picture book that encourages children to celebrate their identities through self-love and validation. The book includes a special author’s note\, featuring Eva’s family photos\, and a list of resources for Asian American advocacy. \nPreviously the editor-in-chief of Lucky\, Eva has also written for ELLE\, Vogue\, Teen Vogue\, Vogue China\, the New York Times\, and the Wall Street Journal. She is currently the head of fashion partnerships at Instagram.

SUMMARY:Birding with Phone Apps - Rattlesnake Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Note that the dates/times for these events have changed as of May 6. \nCome unscramble the multiple wonders of finding\, reporting\, and identifying birds using phone apps. What are the differences between BirdsEye\, eBird\, Merlin\, iBirdPro\, and Seek/iNaturalist?  There are also many other apps useful for bird identification (e.g.\, Sibley\, Peterson\, Audubon\, & NatGeo guides\, Warbler Guide\, Birds of the World\, BirdSongID\, Chirp!BirdSongs)?  Which are most useful and under what circumstances?  What other bird apps might be useful (e.g.\, BirdCodes).  Naturalists Larry Master and Ella Clark will lead this walk and discussion on May 7 at 1 pm and May 14 at 7:30 am at Rattlesnake Preserve. Enter opposite 11 Rattlesnake Road. Be prepared for sun and ticks\, and see the powerful advice here on our website about using permethrin spray to completely avoid ticks! No dogs\, please. \nWe have added a second presentation early in the morning in order to see more and different kinds of birds. The afternoon will still have a few to see and the presentation of technology is the same but we recommend the earlier venue. \nDr. Master is a conservation biologist\, a zoologist\, published author in scientific journals\, and\, in his retirement\, a conservation photographer. He has been photographing wildlife and natural history subjects for more than 65 years and resides in Keene\, NY and Cornwall\, CT.  See an amazing collection of wildlife images on his website: www.masterimages.org.

SUMMARY:Joel Simon - Library
DESCRIPTION:As the Infodemic raged\, autocratic governments used the public health emergency to usurp new powers\, while democratic populists\, including President Donald Trump in the United States\, Jair Bolsonaro In Brazil; and Narendra Modi in India\, attacked and undermined the independent institutions that challenged their narrative that COVID was under control and would disappear like magic. A global wave of censorship hid from us a broader assault on rights that bolstered autocrats and deepened the democratic recession.  \nThese are some of the arguments that Joel Simon and his co-author Rob Mahoney make in their new book\, The Infodemic: How Censorship and Lies Made the World Sicker and Less Free. The book is out April 26\, from Columbia Global Reports. \nJoel will discuss his book live at the Cornwall Library.  He will be interviewed by Anne Garrels\, who was the Senior Foreign Correspondent for NPR for almost 25 years.   \nSpace is limited\, please register at cornwalllibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - "SAMPLER" - Souterrain Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Souterrain Gallery will host its first of the Season Opening Reception on Saturday\, May 28 from  3-6 pm for a group of young artists. \nS A M P L E R\nBound by an interest in craft and materiality\, seven artists explore drawing with alternative techniques. The ceramic sculptures of Sam Berenfield harken a nostalgia for childhood that is challenged by the expressive quilts and drawings of Noah Pica\, whose work evokes an unflinching humor and sensuality that confront the viewer with color and form. Beautifully sensitive drawings by Krista Young respond to the frenetic and ornate patchwork quilt of Emma Redmond. Elizabeth Schweizer and Stefan Sehringer converse through weaving: material dances in the works of Sehringer\, while Schweizer’s surreal images develop through the shifting of color and pattern. Cassie Sheedy intertwines two and three dimensions with multimedia wall reliefs in wood and on paper. Together the artists grapple with the anxiety of being young during uncertain times\, of finding and forging a place to call their own.  \nJazz by Carol Leven and Nick Moran \nAll are welcome!
