SUMMARY:The Hostage Dilemma: Joel Simon in conversation with Anne Garrels - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Joel Simon\, author of We Want to Negotiate: The Secret World of Kidnapping\, Hostages and Ransom and the former Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists\, will discuss American hostages around the world and efforts to bring them home. He will be in conversation with Anne Garrels\, also an author and the distinguished former Senior Foreign Correspondent for National Public Radio. Both journalists have first hand experience reporting on the ground from conflict zones and share the drive to relay information honestly and clearly\, something that is arguably less common these days. Joel’s inspiration for the book they will discuss was the tragic case of journalist James Foley who was kidnapped and publicly murdered by ISIS in Syria in 2014. \nJoel Simon is an author\, journalist\, and press freedom advocate. He is currently a Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Knight First Amendment Institute\, also at Columbia. He is the author of four books\, including The Infodemic: How Censorship and Lies Made the World Sicker and Less Free\, coming on April 26 from Columbia Global Reports. From 2006 until 2021\, Joel served as Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. In his drive to defend the rights of journalists\, he traveled the world\, from Argentina to Zimbabwe. His writing on issues of press freedom has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Guardian\, and The Wall Street Journal\, and he is a regular columnist for Columbia Journalism Review. Under his leadership\, CPJ was honored with the Thomas J. Dodd Prize in International Justice and Human Rights\, a News & Documentary Emmy\, and the 2018 Chatham House Prize. His book\, The New Censorship: Inside the Global Battle for Media Freedom\, was published in November 2014\, and We Want to Negotiate: The Secret World of Kidnapping\, Hostages\, and Ransom was published in 2018. He began his career reporting on the Guatemalan Civil War\, the Mexican environmental crisis\, the Zapatista uprising\, the peso devaluation\, and the assassination of the Mexican Presidential Candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio. In 1998\, Joel published Endangered Mexico: An Environment on the Edge. It was named one of the 100 best books of the year by the LA Times. He is currently living in Cornwall Hollow. \nAnne Garrels was the Senior Foreign Correspondent for NPR for almost 25 years\, a post which allowed listeners to hear her voice from all over the world. In addition to living in Baghdad from late 2002 until 2009 to cover the Iraq war\, she reported from Mongolia\, the Middle East\, the former Yugoslavia\, China\, Russia\, former Soviet republics\, and numerous other locations. She is the author of Putin Country: A Journey into the Real Russia (2016) and Naked in Baghdad: The Iraq War and the Aftermath (2004). Before joining NPR in 1986 she was Chief Correspondent in Moscow and Central America for ABC\, and the State Department Correspondent for NBC. She has been honored with numerous journalism awards\, including the Peabody\, the Polk and the Courage in Journalism Award. She has been a Fellow at the Council of Foreign Relations and served on the board of Oxfam and the Committee to Protect Journalists. She lives in Norfolk. \nRegistration is required via the Cornwall Library website.

SUMMARY:What Cooks Talk About - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what a food stylist does? Do you want to know some of the secrets of great cooking? Join us when Cornwallians Frank Way and Frances Boswell meet on Zoom. They’ll discuss food (of course) the food business\, the business of food\, and how they made it through the pandemic. Frank was the owner and chef at the (now closed) Kent coffee house called frank. food company. Frances is a freelance food stylist. They will also talk about their respective careers\, Frank’s new restaurant endeavor (soon to open in West Cornwall)\, the challenges and joys of food styling\, and how they each ended up living in Cornwall. Everyone who attends the event on Zoom will be entered in a drawing for a $20 gift certificate to the new frank. food!Frank Way started his career as an art director for Calvin Klein’s inhouse ad agency. He later worked with numerous brands including Saatchi & Saatchi\, Limited Brands\, Edelman\, and Martha Stewart Living (where he crossed paths with Frances). He wore many hats — art director\, creative director\, content producer\, consultant — including some time at the boutique consulting firm TATTOO in San Francisco\, developing and evolving new brands. Frank traveled the globe\, developed a passion for understanding cultures and customs\, and when the opportunity came for his first foray into food\, he approached it like everything else in his career… as a branding opportunity. He opened frank. food company in Kent CT in 2019\, and has recently moved it to West Cornwall. The business’s name is not eponymous\, rather it is about what it means to be frank with someone. That idea of honesty\, integrity and forthrightness are what drive all the decisions he makes about the business. It all begins with real food delivered in an environment that makes you feel at home. frank. food is a place for everyone. \nFrances Boswell has worked with food for as long as she can remember. Her first job was “Chopper” at a restaurant when she was 15. She wore swim goggles to protect her eyes from onion fumes. Things improved. She became a private chef and prepared gourmet meals for an adventure travel outfitter. She then joined Martha Stewart Living as part of the magazine’s start up team and rose through the ranks to become Food Editor. After the birth of her first daughter\, she worked as a freelance recipe developer and food stylist for several publications including The New York Times\, Gourmet\, Food and Wine\, Oprah\, Health\, Everyday Food\, Cookie\, and Town & Country. She then became Food Director for Real Simple Magazine. Wanting to explore her interest in food as it relates to health\, she took a hiatus from publishing and studied acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She explains\, “Food is energy. Qi (vital force) is energy. Both warm\, protect\, defend\, move\, and maintain the body in ways which are at once tangible and intangible. Both engender life.”  She stresses the importance of not just diet\, but cooking to one’s overall health and vitality. She believes that for food to nourish both our body and spirit it must taste and look beautiful. She channels this when food styling\, as evidenced by her stunning photos on instagram \nRegister at Cornwalllibrary.org.
