DESCRIPTION:Cornwall Country Dance’s Last Hurrah will be held in the town hall from 7 PM to 9 PM\, Saturday\, October 5.  Maggie McRae will teach and call square\, circle\, and contra dances to the lively jigs and reels played by Relatively Sound Band. Donations suggested to pay Maggie and the band:  $12-$20/adult\, $5/child\, $25-$30/family \nAfter 20 years of organizing community dances for the first Saturday of every month (except during the pandemic)\, the non-profit Motherhouse is taking a break. Great thanks to the musicians of our house band of changing configurations but consistently held together by Jane and Jim Prentice. The Northern war effort depended upon local communities to raise the troops and supplies needed for the battlefield.\nThe history of Litchfield County highlights the challenges Northern communities faced. Armed confrontation erupted over the flying of secession flags. Supporting the war effort provided women with skills and experiences that would aid in the suffrage movement. Scandal swirled around the local army medical examiner. Family and friends actively supported their loved ones as they transformed from civilians to soldiers.\nAuthor Peter C. Vermilyea uses first-hand accounts – many never published before – to investigate these events and show how the process of preparing for war created a lasting bond between a community and its soldiers.\nRegistration is required at cornwalllibrary.org.

Run time: 42 minutes \nSynopsis: Now in his nineties\, the kinetic sculptor Tim Prentice looks back on his career and the influences that shaped him\, including his fascination with the wind; the artists Alexander Calder and George Rickey; his time at Yale studying with Joseph Albers; his father\, who was an architect of note and aspiring craftsperson; and his loss of vision to macular degeneration. In the film\, he talks about how these influences and his own preconceptions crowd around him when he’s in his studio\, and his attempt to be alone as he strives to create an “ideal” work that\, like nature\, expresses at once both chaos and order. The film was shot at his home and studio in Litchfield County\, Connecticut and contains footage from many of the large\, commissioned public works he has done over the decades. \nSeating is limited.
