SUMMARY:Dr. Bernard LaFayette: The Kingian Legacy of Non-Violence from Selma to 2021 - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by the  Bushnell-Sage Library\, Cornwall Library\, Hotchkiss Library\, Norfolk Library\, and the Scoville Memorial Library in collaboration with the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence \nDr. LaFayette is one of the last of a legendary generation of Civil Rights era activists.  From Freedom Rider to the Selma-Montgomery march\, LaFayette protested\, was beaten\, and arrested 27 times.  He worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King. For the last six decades has dedicated his life to the teachings and practice of non-violence. He will give a historical glimpse to the Civil Rights movement\, the instrumentality of non-violence and its relationship to current efforts for equal rights.

SUMMARY:Emily Dickinson: "The Brightness Of Being" with Mark Scarbrough - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Eight weeks\, Tuesday mornings\, 10:00 until about 11:45 am\, April 6 through May 25. \nTucked away in her Amherst bedroom\, safe in that alabaster chamber\, Emily Dickinson crafted lyric poems that still defy interpretation\, point the soul to its depths\, and map the landscape of her (and maybe our?) emotional life. In this seminar\, participants will explore her poems in sets\, both as she left them at her death and in thematic units curated to help us understand the devious\, delightful way she tried to get what it means to be human. In other words\, there is no set weekly reading schedule. Instead\, participants will encounter each set of poems together in the zoom sessions. Please purchase the R. W. Franklin edition of her poems\, recently published by Belknap at Harvard. (This edition supplants the old Thomas Johnson edition\, adding new poems and reworking the textual problems in many.) Bring the required book\, an open mind\, and a cup of coffee—and get ready to settle in with this defying\, illuminating\, and grace-filled poetry. \nFree\,  donations welcome\, via Zoom link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIpf-usrjIpHt27A4ch7T6A7SL3c0br2SOR
